BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia Hints at Expansion Plans for Women's Premier League
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering expanding the Women's Premier League (WPL) as revealed by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia during the 2027 season players' auction. Since its inception in 2023 with five franchises—Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, and UP Warriorz—the WPL has rapidly gained significant national and international attention, helping elevate women's cricket in India and worldwide. Saikia indicated that the BCCI plans to explore increasing the number of teams and improving other areas of the league starting next year. Meanwhile, for the 2027 season, Australia captain Sophie Molineux was the highest bid player, securing INR 1.10 crore from UP Warriorz during the mini auction as franchises focused on acquiring diverse emerging talent.
